Growing up in Pleasantville, New York, Bridget Bueche dreamed of meals that weren't overdone. Her mother insisted that the family eat dinner together, which meant waiting for her father to get home from long workdays in nearby New York City. By the time he did arrive, dinner would be ruined. She vowed dinners would be different when she got older.
In order to keep her vow, Bridget honed her cooking skills. She began catering for her friends' parents, preparing hors d'oeuvres and crudités for their parties, when she was 14 years old. By 19, after bravely answering a newspaper ad for a cook, she was working for Walter Cronkite and his family in Martha's Vineyard. She says the Cronkites enjoyed simple foods and that their favorite dish probably was the roast chicken she often made for them when they returned home from traveling.
